How did the giraffe evolve?

The giraffe stretching it's neck more with every generation is an example of evolution according to Lamarck. His idea was that certain things the parents achieve get carried on the children. Now we know that genetics don't work that way, and Darwinian evolution holds that the giraffe survives where other creatures do not because it's long neck gives it an advantage.
