Is it intolerant to maintain legitimate distinctions between couples who can or cannot be married?

Since prehistoric times and across the world, including cultures not influenced by Judaism or Christianity, and in all major religions, the choice of marriage partners has commonly been restricted to one single adult consenting nonrelative of the opposite sex. Is maintaining these restrictions a matter of intolerance or bigotry?
