You're right - he's overreacting! A "spoiler" gives away something about the plot. If you'd said, "Oh, wait til his daughter is kidnapped by a troupe of Silverback Gorillas!" THAT would be a spoiler. You were just answering his statement, that HE brought up in the first place!
