Can algea treatment harm algea wafers?

I have a huge bottom feeder. It starts with a "P" and I can never pronounce or spell the name! I've had him for many years and am mesmerized by this magnificent prehistoric looking fish. "Allie" is survived by many fish. And when we had to move I had to set up the tank just for him. He has survived quite a few tramas which amazes me. I take very good care of him. However, in his diet of algae wafers, I have an algae problem I need to address but am unsure to treat. Partly because treating algae and feeding my "Allie" algae wafers does concern me. Will treating for algae affect the algae wafers I feed my fish? Would it be harmful? Would it be o.k. to treat my tank for algae and feed my fish? Will the algae treatment target the algae wafer? I have already purchased the treatment, but am having a hard time finding an answer to my question. Can anyone help me? I will not treat the tank until I'm sure It is safe for my fish and his food...PLEASE HELP!!
