Why are (allegedly) 155 million year old fossil creatures the same as today?

Darwin's theory of natural selection, those with certain characteristics which are a hindrance to survival will eventually die out, but those that have mutated or adapted to their environment in a positive way will survive to reproduce. So 155 million years ago this animal had no major hindrances to its survival therefore did not need to change meaning it stayed the same over those millions of years
