Why did everything from prehistoric times evolve, and become smaller?

dinosaurs died out, but did the flying ones evolve into birds? and megalodon or whatever, it was HUGE. now sharks are a lot smaller. and all of the other ocean life. im so interested by things in the past (besides us history).
