Is it weird for guys to hit on girls at the mall?

so i am out of school for the summer and its hella boring and me and my girl broke up. but i want a girlfreind to share the summer with,,,so i was talking to a friend and he said we should go to the mall and randomly start talking to girls...his idea is go up to a girl and say "hey is your name molly" and when she says no just start a convo out of that..but is that creepy or weird for guys to hit on girls at the mall?
